Managing agents.md in Fiidom AEO
agents.md is an instruction file for AI agents. It helps AI assistants understand your store, products, and policies, and how to support your customers. Shopify creates a default version of this file for every store.
Fiidom AEO keeps Shopify's default agent instructions and adds extra sections that help AI understand your store, your brand, and how to advise shoppers. You don't need to write Markdown yourself: you manage everything through the app, and Fiidom merges it all into your final agents.md file when you save.
Open the agents.md page
Go to Apps > Fiidom AEO > AI Discovery, find agents.md in the Overview table, and click View details.

File status
Next to the file name, a status label shows the file's state as reported by Shopify:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Synced | The file was processed successfully and is live. |
| Processing | Shopify is still processing the file. Editing is turned off until it finishes. |
| Not synced | Something went wrong, or the file needs to be updated. |
The status is checked each time you open the page and refreshes automatically while you're on it, so you don't need to reload.
Notices you may see
- This file is managed by Shopify. You can edit it, but changes may affect compatibility with future Shopify updates. You can always reset it to restore the default content. Close this notice with the X.
- Your store content has changed. Your products, collections, or other content have changed since the file was last updated. Update agents.md to bring it in line with your latest content.

Header actions
- View live file: opens the public file on your store, such as
your-store.com/agents.md. This is exactly what AI agents read, so it's the best way to check your changes are live. - Edit: opens the editor so you can change the file's content. It's disabled while the file is processing.
- Regenerate: rebuilds the file from your latest store content. Use it when you see the "store content has changed" notice.

File Preview
The File Preview on the left shows the full content of your agents.md file. It's read-only, so you can review it safely without making accidental changes. Click Copy to copy the whole file.
The preview updates after you save your settings or regenerate the file.
Edit agents.md
- Click Edit in the header. The editing window opens with your file's current content.
- Make your changes. An Unsaved changes bar appears at the top as soon as you start typing.
- Click Save to keep your changes, or Discard to throw them away.

After you save, Fiidom updates your agents.md file and syncs it with Shopify. The editor returns to preview mode, the Discard and Save buttons disappear, and the new status is shown, for example Synced.
While editing, you can also use:
- View live file: to check the current public version.
- Copy: to copy the file's content.
- Reset to default: to restore Shopify's original agents.md and remove your edits. This button only appears once the file has been edited.
Note: If the file is still processing after you save, you won't be able to edit it again until it finishes. Hover over the Edit button to see why it's unavailable.
If the sync fails
If the file can't be processed within 10 minutes, or an error occurs while it's processing, the status changes to Not synced. Once you close the editor, an error message appears on the agents.md page. Try saving or regenerating the file again. If the problem continues, contact our support team.
Auto update & sync
Turn on Automatic updates to have agents.md updated and synced whenever your store content changes. When it's on, you won't need to regenerate the file by hand each time you add products or update policies.
When it's Disabled, the file stays as it is until you click Regenerate or edit it yourself. Use this if you prefer to review every change before it goes live.

AI Crawlers
Choose which AI crawlers can access your agents.md file. Tick a crawler to allow it, or untick it to block it:

| Perplexity | PerplexityBot |

Allowed crawlers show an Allowed label. Keep at least one crawler allowed. If all are blocked, AI assistants can't read the file, and your AI Discoverability score on the Overview drops.
